It’s tempting to say that Peover is deep in the heart of the Cheshire countryside.
But it isn’t. It’s within a drive and a 4-iron of the M6’s Junction 19 and, at one
point, the motorway runs right through it. Not that you’d notice. That’s the extraordinary
thing about Peover. The motorways and A-roads serve it up to you on a plate and yet,
when you’re actually there, they’ve all but disappeared. Maybe it’s the golf course
itself that does it. From one to eighteen, there isn’t a hole that leaves you alone.
Take your eye off the ball and it’s gone, which is why Peover has a countrywide reputation
for being just a tad difficult. But it’s also fun. The setting is picture postcard,
complete with winding river, natural wildlife habitats and a thousand and one trees.
And that’s just the first. Seventeen holes later and it’s a welcome world back in
the clubhouse. Some clubhouse. It seems to be entirely made of wood and comes complete
with a small lake and the eighteenth green in front of it. A cross between a mountainside
Swiss chalet and a log cabin. Unique. And, as such, entirely in keeping with the
spirit of Peover itself.
