Designed by Patrick Dawson, architect of The Belfry - and there’s no finer introduction
to Long Sutton that can be made. 118 acres of rolling Somerset parkland, some ten
miles north of Yeovil.. The club opened its doors in 1996 and hasn’t looked back.
Purpose-built, it wants for nothing. From the creature comforts of the clubhouse
to a course that will intrigue you, Long Sutton has proved a welcome addition to
the golfing hierarchy of the West Country. It’s possible that, when it first opened,
the course might have seemed apparently quite straightforward. Yes, there were more
than one or two dog-legs - in fact, even the straightest of holes seemed to have
more than a little of a boomerang in them. The bunkers were none-too-friendly, most
especially the necklace gathered round the 9th. But, it all seemed fairly open. But,
that was then and this is now. The dog-legs are still there, as are the bunkers.
But they’ve now been joined by the trees and, as Dawson would have known all too
well, they make the difference. But enjoy it. After all, the views across the Somerset
Levels are magnificent.
