The name somehow says it all. Twenty-five miles north of London, bedded deep in the
Hertfordshire countryside, Hanbury is ‘style,’ writ large. A massive, neo-Jacobean
manor house, now a sumptuous country club, spa and hotel. One of the finest parkland
courses in the country which ingeniously seems to marry the pulse of 21st century
golf with an equally deep-rooted and slower-moving sense of history. It’s the Nicklaus
way. Playing at the edge, whilst always embracing the traditions of the game. Which
is exactly as it should be, since it was Jack’s son who designed the course. Cedar,
chestnut, oak and sequoia. Broad lakes. Rolling, manicured fairways. Hanbury’s eighteen
holes are more than just golf. They are an experience. And there’s even a secret
garden. On your way to the first tee, make sure you seek out the ivy-covered archway,
partially hidden in the undergrowth. And later, in the quiet of a Hanbury evening,
return and walk through it. The day’s golf was magic, the day’s close supreme.
