It’s fairly straightforward to see what the Phoenix and the Griffin might have in common, since they were both birds of ancient mythology. But pairing them off with a French diamond farmer? How does that work? Easy. Having made his fortune, in 1884 the Frenchman built a large and striking manor house in deepest Sussex. Pease Pottage, to be precise. Ten years later, the house was sold and became Cottesmore School which, one hundred and thirteen years later, is still going strong. However, in the 1970’s, 247 acres of this glorious Sussex estate were sold to the Rogerson family, whose vision then transformed the land into two wonderful golf courses. Their names? You guessed it. The Phoenix and the Griffin. Of the two, the Phoenix is the shorter and, arguably, the easier. But don’t get too carried away with thoughts of climbing the leaderboard. There are trees and lakes a-plenty surrounding the fairways of the Cottesmore Golf and Country Club, ever pleasing to the eye, unless you’ve happened to hit your ball towards them. The good news on the Griffin is that there are no bunkers. The bad news is the width of the fairways and the size of the greens. Very narrow and very small. But very beautiful.
